Adapting Upland Ecosystem Services
to Climate Change
Planning for the Future at
Community Level
A 2 day workshop to share knowledge
about adapting to climate change in the uplands and to outline and
develop a partnership research proposal.
Held on the 4th and 5th
September 2007
This Workshop is aimed at
researchers, institutions and organisations, concerned with planning
and delivery of ecosystem services in the uplands of Europe, who
wish to discuss how such future planning and delivery may be
affected by climate change. The Workshop will provide an opportunity
for delegates to relate wide-scale models of change to assessments
of risk management of environmental assets at a local scale.
The Workshop will explore how top-down planning can meet community
aspiration and local knowledge and we will discuss ecosystem
services, the strategic use of land and the role of planning. The
workshop aims to identify an approach to evaluating scenarios of
change by looking at how top-down strategies can be integrated with
bottom-up knowledge and experience from local communities. It also
aims to identify what information is of interest to both local
communities and national and regional strategists and will inform
integrated decision taking. The target participant profile therefore
includes community representatives, land managers, agencies and
local authority representatives.
National and International participants and speakers will provide
information to aid discussion and to allow comparison between
different regions. The Workshop will also enable discussion towards
the development of a more rigorous testing of scenario development
incorporating the inclusion of contrasting systems of governance.
The Workshop will therefore provide an opportunity to identify
future research activities in partnership with ICU-C and beyond and
to build, or expand, networks among a wide variety of organisations.
