Upland Centre Helen Shaw Profile

Dr Helen Shaw

Academic Qualifications
2006 PhD:  A palaeoecological investigation of long-term stand-scale ecological dynamics in semi-open native pine woods: Contributing to conservation management in east Glen Affric School of Biological and Environmental Sciences. University of Stirling.
1998 BSc (Hons) Science: 2.1 Open University
1997 BSc (Hons) Biology: 2.1 Southampton University

Current Position
October 2007- present Research Fellow International Centre for the Uplands, University of Cumbria (Continuing previous Lancaster University role).

Employment History
September 2004 – October 2007 Research Officer, International Centre for the Uplands, Lancaster University.
October 2001 – September 2004 PhD Researcher School of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Stirling

Research into the woodland history of the Glen Affric Pine Forest: an extant, putatively relict, native pine wood. Using fine-resolution palynology to determine the recent (c.3000 years) history and spatial dynamics of the pine woodland to inform conservation management.
Demonstrating experience to undergraduate students.

January 1999 – August 2001 Scientific Programmes Assistant: Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Wallingford (CEH).

Scientific support, administration and conference organisation for various scientific programmes ranging from Global to UK in scale including:
Programme Assistant Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems (GCTE) Focus 3 - an IGBP Project
Programme Assistant Urban Regeneration and the Environment (URGENT) - a NERC Thematic Programme
Man and the Biosphere UK Office - a UNESCO Programme: Assistant to Secretariat
Secretary to The Royal Society Global Environmental Research Committee (2001)
Secretary to the UK MAB Urban Forum (2000-1)
Office support to Terrestrial Initiative in Global Environmental Research (TIGER) - A NERC Thematic Programme

Funding
2008 University of Cumbria Research Development Fund - £2000 for studies into pollen representation in Cumbrian Upland Oak woods.
2002 Inverness Field Club – Bursary £1,000 towards vegetation surveys in Glen Affric to test the pollen-vegetation relationship in the Glen as a contribution towards palaeoecological research.
